The Caspian horse is a rare and endangered breed with an extremely small breeding population. Over the last decade, very few foals have been born each year, and the Caspian is on the verge of a genetic bottleneck and genetic depression. Where do we go from here?

In the 1990s, when Caspians were first imported to North America, they were touted as exotic animals. These small, hot-blooded horses fetched premium prices in a very prosperous time. New breeding programs were starting up, albeit separated by thousands of miles over land or sea. The costs to transport were still justifiable so long as the value of horses remained high.

When the economy took a major hit, the bottom fell out on horse values everywhere, and the trend of importing and breeding Caspians came to an end. According to the USDA, the number of horse breeding farms decreased by 12 percent in 2012, and rare breeds like the Caspian saw even more drastic losses.

Fortunately, there is still time to correct course. Understanding that economic impacts can wreak havoc on vulnerable populations, it is essential to encourage breeders to continue breeding, to assist in breeding plans, and celebrate achievements big or small.

We are here to help. The most important action we can take right now is to build a coalition of people dedicated to our mission to save the Caspian. And that’s where you come in!

Free access to pedigrees online with our studbook. Track purebred and part bred Caspians, search for siblings and offspring of any horse in our database, and calculate inbreeding coefficients with hypothetical breeding match-ups.

Receive priority registration and customer service. Although our registration services are available to anyone, our members will enjoy prioritized service. If you have a special case, we will assist you to find a solution.

Add Caspians or stud services to the Marketplace. If you are producing foals, chances are you might have one for sale once in a while, or you may have AI services available to other breeders. Submit your ads to post on the website.

Add Caspians to our sponsorship program. If you ever need extra help with your breeding projects or promotion goals, your horses may be eligible for sponsorship. Build a relationship with your sponsor and broaden your network!

Attend our webinars and open forums. There’s always something new to learn, and your membership gets you free access to members-only webinars. You will also have the opportunity to join us in open forum discussions where you can provide feedback and ideas for CHBA.

Enter our virtual shows and awards program. You and your registered horses would be able to enter our online shows where you collect show points to qualify for special titles at our end-of-year awards ceremony.
